Redbirds Fall to Big Inning at Northwestern, 6-3

EVANSTON, Ill. – Illinois State lost at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park on Wednesday afternoon to Northwestern by a final score of 6-3. The Wildcats scored five runs in the home half of the eighth inning to take the lead. The Redbirds were unable to score in the ninth inning to fall short in the contest. Illinois State drops to 27-18 during its three game skid.

"It's the first time that our bullpen has coughed up a lead late in a game in quite some time. Johnson and Gilmore have been really good for us all year, but in baseball anything can happen. I can't wait to give those two guys the ball late in the game though."

Scoring Breakdown:

  • Rave singled through the right side to score Jack Butler for the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Northwestern evened the score in the home half of the inning on a double down the right field line.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Joe Butler reached on a fielder's choice that scored Jeremy Gaines. Later in the inning, Joe Aeilts scored on a wild pitch to extend the Redbird lead to 3-1. The Wildcats responded with five runs on six hits in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead 6-3.
  • The Redbirds got the first two batters on base in the top of the ninth inning, but three straight outs ended the game.
