BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Illinois State gymnastics program ranked in the top 20 nationally for its 2018-19 team grade point average (GPA) in the most recent data released by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA).
A complete list of team GPAs were submitted and documented by each of the institutions. More than 56 percent of student-athletes overall maintained a GPA of 3.5 or more on a 4.0 scale and a record number, 125 (8.91%), recorded a 4.0 GPA in the annual release. A full list of WCGA Scholastic All-America Award winners, who are all student-athletes with 3.5 overall grade point average or a 3.5 grade point average for 2018-19, was also announced.Â
"The classroom has always been a focus for women's gymnastics student-athletes, and these numbers indicate
they are as talented academically as they are athletically," Kerrie Turner, WCGA president and head coach at
Bowling Green, said. "This kind of systemic success is the result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved in our programs."
The Redbirds were one of 31 teams nationally with a team GPA of 3.5 or more on a 4.0 scale, coming in at No. 20 overall, and over 60 percent of the team earned WCGA Scholastic All-America Awards.
