Redbirds Earn Dual Meet Win Over MIC Foe Southeast Missouri

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State gymnastics team overcame an early equipment malfunction that caused a delay in the meet to secure a win inside Redbird Arena by a final score of 191.300-190.925 over Midwest Independent Conference foe Southeast Missouri State Friday night.

Scoring Breakdown:
•    Vault: SEMO 47.475, ISU 47.425
•    Bars: ISU 47.850, SEMO 47.625
•    Beam: SEMO 47.575, ISU 47.550
•    Floor: ISU 48.475, SEMO 48.250

Thoughts from Coach Bob Conkling:
"The problems with the vault definitely threw the meet off. I told the girls to be ready to compete no matter what event we start on and be consistent. On beam and floor, we came back strong and did a great job. We are excited to stay at home again next weekend and having two home meets in a row is a nice treat."

Team Notes:
•    The meet had a rough start due to the vault malfunction and the Redbirds had to initially skip their vault rotation and go straight to bars.
•    After two rotations, the Redbirds trailed the Redhawks by a score of 95.275-95.100 … the Redbirds competed strong on bars though, with three gymnasts scoring over 9.650 to take the top three spots in the event.
•    ISU eventually took the lead over SEMO after the final rotation, with three gymnasts scoring over 9.750 to give the Redbirds the event win on floor and the meet victory.

Gymnast Notes:
•    Sophomore Sofia Iribarren competed strong on bars and scored a 9.800 to win the event … Iribarren posted a 9.575 on vault to give her a second-place finish in that competition as well.
•    Senior Gabrielle Cooke won the vault competition with a 9.700 and posted a 9.675 on bars to give her a second-place finish … she also competed on beam for the first time this season and recorded a score of 9.600 to place fourth.
•    Junior Cameron Topp took the event win on floor with a season-high score of 9.825.
•    Junior Savannah Remkus received a 9.675 on beam, to give her a second-place finish.
•    Competing in floor for the first time this season, sophomore Mia Quigg took fourth place with a 9.750.

Up Next:
•    The Redbirds remain at home to compete against Northern Illinois on Friday, Jan. 24, inside Horton Field House at 7 p.m.
