MOBILE, Ala. – Illinois State climbed the leaderboard and finished with a tie of ninth place at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate against a field that featured three teams ranked in the top 50 in the country.
The Redbirds improved in the final round of the tournament, shooting four strokes under in the round and finishing with a three-round score of 865 (294-287-284). Illinois State climbed three spots on the leaderboard over the final 18 holes to tie with Wofford for ninth. Florida State took home the tournament team championship with a score of 836 (-28).
Leading the round for the Redbirds were seniors David Perkins and Joel Durnford, who both shot two strokes under in the round. Perkins improved off of two strong rounds and finished five strokes under par and tied for 15th over the entirety of the tournament. Durnford finished the tournament one under par, after two consecutive rounds under par.
Freshman Felix van Dijk and junior Dan Anfield both shot even-par for the day. van Dijk carded an eagle and finished the tournament one stroke over par. Anfield ended the tournament with a score of 229.
Junior Joe Hodgson carded four birdies in the final round and scored 227 in the tournament. Junior Andrew O'Brien, who participated as an individual, finished with a score of 222.
"We were looking for a different outcome overall, but I like the direction we moved after a tough start yesterday," head coach Ray Kralis said. "We can learn from this and will be better next time."
The squad will return to the course next month when they travel to Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. to compete in the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular.
