BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Western Kentucky (16-4) used an 11-run fourth inning to top Illinois State (9-9), 12-1, in the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling championship game on Sunday.
BY THE NUMBERS / KEY INNINGS
- Western Kentucky broke open scoring in the bottom of the third inning, scoring an unearned run on a throwing error by ISU.
- The Hilltoppers scored 11 runs on eight hits and another ISU error in the fourth to hold a commanding 12-0 lead going into the final frame.
- Illinois State battled, as Brittni LaFountaine led off the frame with a single to WKU's third baseman. Pinch runner Kenzie Pence charged to second base on a wild pitch and Taylor Vanderpool walked to put two on-base for the Redbirds in the top of the fifth.
- Another single to third base, this time by Kaili Chval, brought Pence home to put ISU on the board, but the Hilltoppers recorded the next two outs to seal the win, 12-1.
ON DECK
Illinois State will spend the first part of Spring Break at the LSU Round Robin, before taking on Southern University and opening Missouri Valley Conference play on the road at Southern Illinois.
