NORMAL, Ill. – After having its first scheduled meet of the season postponed last week, the Illinois State gymnastics team heads to Muncie, Indiana, Sunday to officially open its 2021 season against the Ball State Cardinals at Worthen Arena at 2 p.m. CT.
"We are excited to finally be able to compete this weekend against Ball State," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "We have a limited team numbers wise, but they have worked hard this week to prepare for success. Â We will have many athletes that will have the opportunity to compete in events that they previously have not competed in their college careers. Â They have all stepped up in a huge way this week and I'm so proud of their determination and dedication to put their best out on the competition floor."
The Redbirds return nine gymnasts from last year's squad, including 2020 MIC Newcomer of the Year Angelica Labat and MIC First-Team performer Sofia Iribarren. Veterans Cameron Topp, Savannah Remkus and Triniti Barron also return to help lead this year's team that includes eight freshmen newcomers.Â
Ball State opened the 2021 season with a 193.500 mark and a home win over MAC favorite Central Michigan last weekend. The Cardinals were led by Arden Hudson, who was the meet's top scorer in both bars (9.825) and beam (9.750).
