Redbirds Drop Season Opener at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Illinois State gymnastics squad went into its season opener at Ball State with a limited roster but competed hard against the Cardinals nonetheless inside Worthen Arena. Ball State improved on its season-opening score last week and picked up a 194.425-187.975 victory over Illinois State.

Scoring Breakdown:
•    Vault: BSU 48.875, ISU 47.850
•    Bars: BSU 48.975, ISU 46.350
•    Beam: BSU 47.525, ISU 46.675
•    Floor: BSU 49.050, ISU 47.100

Thoughts from Coach Bob Conkling:
"I am so proud of the eight team members that pushed to get routines ready for competition this week, especially on those events they usually don't compete. We had some unexpected nice routines and a few that could have gone better but overall, they pushed through and did what they could. Junior Charlise Doctor and senior Savannah Remkus competed in the all-around for the first time in their college careers and did well."

Team Notes:
•    The Redbirds recorded their highest score of the day on vault with a 47.850, as two gymnasts posted scores of 9.6 or above.
•    ISU also had a solid rotation on floor, recording a 47.100 team score with two scores over 9.7.

Gymnast Notes:
•    Sofia Iribarren, Charlise Doctor and Savannah Remkus each competed in the all-around for ISU, with Iribarren leading the way with a 38.375 thanks to a 9.800 score on bars.
•    Doctor led the way for the Redbirds on vault with a score of 9.675 to finish tied for fifth.
•    Iribarren's 9.800 tied her for third on bars, and her score of 9.600 on beam tied her with teammates Angelica Labat and Doctor for third on the event.
•    Cameron Topp led the way on floor for the Redbirds with the highest individual score of the day at 9.825 to tie for second place, with Remkus following with a 9.725 to place seventh.

Up Next:
The Redbirds host their first home meet of the season next Saturday, Feb. 6, inside Horton Field House against Southeast Missouri State at 2 p.m.
