Emon Washington Named MVC Newcomer of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After a stellar effort in helping the Illinois State Redbirds sweep the Bradley Braves, ISU freshman Emon Washington has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.

Washington scored a game-high 20 points against the Braves, hitting on seven of his dozen shot attempts, and all five of his free throw tries. He pulled down eight rebounds and nabbed two steals – also game-highs – as he dished out four assists against no turnovers.

This season the Atlanta, Georgia, native has played in 20 games with seven starts. He is averaging 5.5 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per contest. He has made 54.8 percent (40-of-73) of his shots from the field and has a 26-to-9 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Washington is the second Redbird to be named Newcomer of the Week, joining Josiah Strong who received the honor on November 30. Having Strong and Washington earn Newcomer of the Week honors is the first time since the 2014-15 season when Illinois State had two different student-athletes earn the award.

The Redbirds return to action on Friday, November 26 (8 p.m.) and Saturday, November 27 (5 p.m.) when the squad hosts the UNI Panthers in the 2020-21 regular season finale.
