Day Tosses 16-Strikeout No-Hitter as Redbirds Win MTSU Invitational

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Morgan Day became the first Redbird pitcher since 2011 to toss a complete-game no-hitter on Sunday, as the Illinois State softball team (12-4) took the MTSU Invitational title game, 2-0, against North Dakota State (4-11).

  • Morgan Day: 7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 16 K
    • First no-hitter for the Redbirds since Taylor Baxter did so against Central Connecticut State on Feb. 27, 2011.

BY THE NUMBERS / KEY INNINGS – vs. North Dakota State

  • It was a pitcher's duel from the start, as Day struck out the side in the fourth inning to collect her 10th strikeout with only 13 batters faced.
  • The Redbirds tried to strike first in the fifth, loading the bases on a pair of Bison fielding errors and single from Kaili Chval, but North Dakota State worked its way out of the jam.
  • Day struck out the side again in the top of the sixth, before Jayden Standish's second home run in as many games in the home half of the inning helped the Redbirds jump on the board. With a pair of outs, pinch hitter Andrea Coursey stepped up to the dish and delivered an RBI single to left field extending ISU's lead.
  • Two more strikeouts for Day highlighted the final frame, as the senior completed her no-hit effort in the circle for her sixth win of the season.

ON DECK

Illinois State is set to open Missouri Valley Conference play on the road at Indiana State next weekend. The Redbirds' three-game series with the Sycamores is slated to begin at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday (March 20) with a doubleheader, before wrapping up on Sunday (March 21) with a single game.
