Strong Pitching, Power at the Plate Leads to 7-2 Victory over DePaul for ISU

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State softball team (21-5) used a 15-strikeout performance by Morgan Day and a pair of multi-run innings to power past DePaul (16-9) Tuesday night in its nonconference finale. With the win, the Redbirds improved to a perfect 4-0 at Marian Kneer Stadium, while picking up their third-straight victory.

BY THE NUMBERS / KEY INNINGS

  • A two-out, two-RBI double by Mack Leonard, followed by a single from Kaili Chval helped Illinois State jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, while DePaul made a pitching change.
  • Morgan Day recorded her fifth and sixth strikeout in the top of the third to sit the Blue Demons down in order for the third-consecutive inning.
  • DePaul lifted a solo home run over the left field wall in the fourth to cut into ISU's lead, before capitalized on a pair of fielding errors by the Redbirds in the sixth, as a sac fly to center field brought the Blue Demons within one.
  • Back-to-back home runs by Spenser Strandgard and Brandi LaFountaine kickstarted a four-fun sixth inning for the Redbirds, as an RBIs by Reili Gardner and Leonard helped push ISU ahead, 7-2.
  • Two more strikeouts delivered by Day highlighted a scoreless seventh by DePaul, as the senior finished with 15 in the game to earn her 12th win in the circle this season.

The Redbirds will return to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend when it hosts preseason favorite Southern Illinois in a three-game series. Attendance is currently limited to player pass list only and tickets are not available to the general public.
