NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – In a second round that was very up and down for Illinois State senior David Perkins, the East Peoria native ended the day with a four-over 76 on the 7,173-yard, par-72 Sagamore Golf Club.
Perkins ends the second round in a tie for 41st place in the field with 18 holes remaining in the 54-hole tournament.
"I had a few holes there that would have gotten to me – and they did get to me a little bit," said Perkins. "I was able to get past those and coming in made a few birdies. I'm not pleased, but there is another day to do some damage, and I'll see what I can do."
Perkins started the day strong with a par to open the round before going back-to-back with birdies on the second and third hole, dropping his tournament score to three strokes under par.
He followed with three more pars before he hit his rough patch of the round, as on the 550-yard par-five seventh hole, his second shot found the water, as he ended the hole with a bogey. On the following hole, a 217-yard par-three, Perkins' tee shot found a nearly impossible to escape bunker, as he ended the hole with a triple bogey, pushing his score to two shots over par on the day.
After a par to close the front nine he opened the back with a bogey, par, and double bogey to take his score to five shots over par.
He settled in over the final six holes of the round, closing the final third of the round at a stroke under par with five pars and a birdie on the 578-yard, par-five 14th hole.
Perkins tees off tomorrow morning at 8:31 a.m. CT.
