Anstey Advances to 1,500m Quarterfinal on Day 1 of NCAA West Prelims

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Fifth year senior Jack Anstey clocked the fastest time in the first round of the 1,500-meter run to highlight the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round at E.B. Cushing Stadium.

Anstey was in the first of four heats, recording a time of 3:43.34 for the fastest time of the day and his second-fastest 1,500m run time of the season. One of 25 student-athletes to advance to the quarterfinals, he will race for one of 12 qualifying spots to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, May 28 at 5:45 p.m.

Freshmen Riley Wells (800-meter run) and Brandon Ratliff (110-meter hurdles) saw their first outdoor seasons in a Redbird uniform come to an end today with each running solid races for ISU. Wells, who was the MVC Champ indoors and the MVC Runner-Up outdoors in the 800m, ran his second-fastest 800-meter race of the season to finish 27th with a time of 1:50.18. In the hurdles, Ratliff's time of 14.25 (2.8w) was his third-fastest of the season and placed 40th in the first round of the event.

Starting the day off for the 'Birds was Logan Calvin in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 61.35 meters (201-3 ft.), which was the 24th best throw of the day. After entering the competition with the 48th-best mark overall, Calvin improved by 24 spots and bettered his No. 6 mark in school history.

In the shot put, both Calvin and freshman Amiri Buchanan competed with Calvin finishing 22nd and Buchanan 42nd in the event. Calvin tossed a mark of 18.24 meters (59-10.25 ft.), while Buchanan's best throw was 16.42 meters (53-10.5 ft.).

Vaulting in a Redbird uniform for the final time in his career, ISU outdoor pole vault school record holder Kellen Kravik cleared 4.85 meters (15-11 ft.) to finish 45th in the event overall.
