Redbirds Roll To 7-0 Sweep of Chicago State

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – For the second day in a row, Illinois State rolled to a 7-0 sweep with its win Saturday over in-state foe Chicago State at the Evergreen Racquet Club. With the win, the Redbirds improve to 3-1 this spring.

"We did a good job keeping our composure in some close sets today," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "Tijana (Zlatanovic) in particular had a tough opponent and played two great tie breakers to come away with a victory."

The dominant duo of Laura Fitzgerald and Alexandra Abyasova got the 'Birds off to a good start with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles and a win by Penelope Abreu and Maria Potsi at No. 2 secured the early point for ISU. Just for good measure, the No. 1 doubles tandem of Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic rallied from down 4-0 to win six straight games to win the set 6-4 and complete the sweep.

The Redbirds dominated in singles action winning all six matches to come away with the dominant win. Zlatanovic won a thriller to cap off the match in a second-set tiebreaker. After rallying to win the first set in a tiebreaker, Zlatanovic came from behind to force a tiebreaker in set two, which she went on to win 7-2.

A road contest against IUPUI in Indianapolis will wrap up a busy weekend for the Redbirds on Sunday. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
