JONESBORO, Ark. – The Illinois State baseball team allowed five runs in the 8th inning as the 'Birds fell, 8-6, to Arkansas State (3-4) at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field on Friday.
Illinois State (4-3) was led by three hits from fifth-year junior Jake McCaw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An errant throw yielded a 2nd-inning run for the 'Birds as sixth-year senior Aidan Huggins scored from first before a single by third-year sophomore Greg Nichols doubled the lead.
A single by second-year freshman Tyler Woltman in the 4th inning scored fifth-year senior Nick Gile for a 3-0 Redbird lead. The Red Wolves scored two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Illinois State countered with a second-year freshman Jonathan Sabotnik RBI single in the top of the 5th inning but ASU got the run back in the bottom of the inning.
McCaw scored on a wild pitch in the 7th inning to put the 'Birds up, 5-3.
The 'Birds loaded the bases in the 8th inning, scoring on a Huggins bases-loaded walk that forced in Woltman. Arkansas State scored five runs in the the bottom of the inning to take the 8-6 lead
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- ISU struck out a season-high 14 times.
- The 'Birds stranded a season-high 12 runners.
- Fifth-year junior Jared Hart recorded his fifth appearance of the season, all of which have been exactly two innings. Hart, who has allowed just one run in 2022, has recorded multiple strikeouts in all five outings.

Illinois State will play a Saturday doubleheader at Arkansas State, starting at 12:00 p.m. CT. The games will be on ESPN+ as the schedule was altered to due forecasted rain.
