ST. LOUIS – For the second time in as many weeks, an Illinois State doubles pair has taken home weekly honors as the duo of Penelope Abreu and Maria Potsi were named the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday for their performances last week against Saint Louis and Missouri State.
It marks the fifth MVC Doubles Team of the Week honor for the Redbirds this season and the second for Abreu, who won previously with teammate Alexandra Abyasova. Last week, the No. 1 duo of Tijana Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic took home the honor for the second time this spring.
Abreu and Potsi were rock solid in a pair of wins in the No. 2 spot for the Redbirds last week. The tandem picked up a 6-3 win on Wednesday against Saint Louis to help the Redbirds earn the crucial doubles point over the Billikens. They then rolled to a 6-1 win over Missouri State's Sandra Lukacova and Kate Miley to give ISU the doubles point and the sweep over the Bears. With the two wins, the duo moved their winning streak to three matches in a row and they improved to 2-0 in MVC play.
The Redbirds are back in action this weekend for an Iowa road swing, as they compete at Drake on Saturday and then Northern Iowa on Sunday for a pair of crucial MVC contests.
