FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Redshirt senior Logan Calvin punched his ticket to the NCAA Track and Field Championships with an eighth-place finish in the men's shot put. Calvin tossed 19.63m (64-5) at the West Prelims to advance. He becomes the first Redbird to qualify for NCAA Championship meet in the shot put since Curt Jensen did so in 2014.
It was textbook for Riley Wells in the men's 800m, as he used a strong closing lap to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. Wells' time of 1:47.82 was the fifth-fastest in the opening round. He now ranks No. 2 in school history, just seven-hundredths of a second off the 1998 school record.
Senior Cole Maguire advanced to the quarterfinals in the men's 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 51.34 in the opening round. Maguire finished third in heat three and will race on Friday at 7:25 PM CT.
Sophomore Ariel Atias wrapped up his first season as a Redbird, as he threw 56.93m (186-9) to finish 45th in the men's javelin. In his first year at Illinois State, Atias was crowned an MVC champion three times (heptathlon, javelin, decathlon). He also broke the school record in both the heptathlon and decathlon and ranks No. 4 in school history in the javelin.
Brandon Ratliff closed out his second outdoor campaign with the Redbirds, finishing 41st among the best in the West Region in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.34. Joe Boyer wrapped up his breakout season with a throw of 16.83m (55-2.75) in the shot put in his first appearance at the NCAA West Prelims.
