Green Bay Too Much for the Redbirds

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Despite senior Kate Bullman's career-high 18 points, Illinois State (1-1, 0-0 MVC) suffered its first loss of the season Saturday to Green Bay (1-1, 0-0 Horizon) 88-62 at the Kress Center.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bullman led Illinois State in scoring for just the second time in her career. She scored 13 points in the second half and 11 points in the third quarter alone Saturday.

  • Redshirt senior Maya Wong tied her career high for the second straight game to open the season. After 17 points Monday night at Omaha, she poured in 17 more Saturday and added five assists and a pair of steals.

  • Illinois State led 5-3 in the opening moments of the game, but Green Bay built a 19-9 lead after one that the Redbirds could not overcome. Green Bay led 42-28 at the half on 8-for-17 shooting from deep.

  • Wong led an 8-2 third quarter run that trimmed the deficit to 56-50. Bullman hit a pair of free throws before Wong completed an old-fashioned three-point play at the line. Wong knocked down a three on the next possession and the Redbirds trailed by six with 4:13 to go in the third. Green Bay responded with consecutive threes, extending their lead back to double figures before the end of the quarter.

  • The Phoenix opened the fourth on an 11-0 run to take a 77-54 advantage and ultimately pull away from Illinois State.

  • Green Bay's Callie Genke led all scorers with 26 points on the afternoon, which included a 5-for-9 mark from deep.

GAME NOTES

  • Wong has scored 15+ points in back-to-back games for just the second time in her Illinois State career. She also did so last season Jan. 1 vs UNI (15 points) and Jan. 5 at Missouri State (16 points).

  • The Redbirds suffered a loss to the Phoenix for the second straight season and dropped to 2-6 all-time vs Green Bay.

  • It was the most points the Redbirds have given up since a 98-58 loss at Iowa in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. It's the most points the Redbirds have surrendered in the regular season since a 104-62 loss at Drake in February of 2022.
