Illinois State Clinches Series at Arkansas State with 12-8 Win

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Illinois State baseball team clinches its series at Arkansas State with a 12-8 win behind 15 Redbird hits on Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.

Five Redbirds (4-2 overall) had multiple hits but third-year junior Auggie Rasmussen (7th-inning go-ahead home run) and fourth-year juniors Greg Nichols (9th-inning double) and Shay Kubo (9th-inning single) all recorded key two-RBI hits.

Fourth-year junior Erik Kubiatowicz was credited with the win after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while fifth-year senior Jared Hart tallied his first save of 2023 by recording the final six outs against the Red Wolves (3-3 overall).

HOW IT HAPPENED  

After a 26-minute delay due to umpire injury in the bottom of the 1st inning, the Red Wolves scored three times in the opening frame.

Second-year sophomore JT Sokolove got Illinois State on the board with bases-loaded walk in the 2nd inning, but ASU countered with run in the bottom of the inning.

Rasmussen was just a couple feet shy of a grand slam in the 2nd inning, but ASU ultimately rewarded the effort with a key error in the 3rd inning that brought home a pair of Redbirds before fourth-year junior Adrian Flores tied the game at 4-4 with a single to center.

Rasmussen swiped both second and third in the 4th inning, coming home on a wild pitch to give ISU its first lead of the game, which Arkansas State retook with two runs in the 5th inning.

After a 7th-inning passed ball evened the game, Rasmussen delivered the game's big blow with a two-run shot to right, putting the Redbirds up, 8-6.

ASU got a run back in the 8th inning but a two-RBI double by Nichols and two-RBI single by Kubo put the 'Birds up, 12-7.

Arkansas State scored once in the final inning but left the bases juiced as Hart induced a ground ball to close out the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Hart recorded his first save of 2023.
  • Rasmussen joins Kubo and second-year sophomore Noah Rabin as Redbirds to have two steals in a game in 2023.

  • Illinois State has now scored 12+ runs in three games in 2023. ISU scored 16+ in four of its first seven games in 2018.

  • Kubiatowicz has thrown 6.2 scoreless innings in 2023.
