ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Illinois State baseball fifth-year senior Derek Salata was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week following his performance at Arkansas State on Friday, announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Salata threw six innings, striking out 12 batters while allowing four hits and one earned run en route to his second-straight victory to open 2023. Salata also was the winning pitcher at Austin Peay on February 17 after four shutout innings.
Salata struck out at least one batter in each of his six innings pitched against the Red Wolves and fanned at least two batters in five of the six innings.
Salata was named MVC Pitcher of the Week in 2022 after his performance against 19th-ranked Purdue (CLICK HERE).
He is the first Illinois State recipient of an MVC weekly honor in 2023.
