Pacella Hits 9th Home Run in Illinois State's 8-6 Loss to Murray State

NORMAL, Ill. - Freshman Daniel Pacella hit his ninth home run of the season in the Illinois State baseball team's 8-6 loss to Murray State on Sunday at Duffy Bass Field.

Pacella moves into sole possession of third on Illinois State's list of most home runs by freshmen in program history. Frank Mustari's 16 in 1985 tops the list.

Illinois State (10-20 overall, 2-10 Missouri Valley Conference) got three scoreless innings from fourth-year junior Elijah Dale to keep Illinois State within two runs in the final three innings.

Murray State moves to 19-17 overall, 7-5 MVC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Murray State scored the game's first five runs in the 3rd inning, but the Redbirds responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame as second-year sophomore Nick Strong (RBI single up the middle), fourth-year junior Shaydon Kubo (RBI single to left field), and Pacella (two-RBI single to beat shift) put the Redbirds back within a run.

The Racers hit a pair of home runs in the 5th inning to lead 8-4.

Pacella homered before fourth-year junior Greg Nichols singled home fourth-year junior Adrian Flores to put ISU within 8-6 through five innings.

Illinois State had one baserunner in the final four innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Pacella's three RBI-game is his fourth game with at least three RBIs. He is tied for the team-lead with Kubo at 12 multi-hit games.
  • Third-year junior Auggie Rasmussen's on-base streak moves to 10 games as he was hit by a pitch.
  • Four Redbirds had two hits (Pacella, Nichols, Strong, and freshman Luke Lawrence)
