ST. LOUIS – Illinois State women's basketball student-athlete, Mary Crompton, was one of four Missouri Valley Conference student-athletes to receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the conference, as announced Thursday morning.
The Missouri Valley Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee voted to award postgraduate scholarships to the four student-athletes, due to their exemplary academic and athletic performances.
Crompton was most recently named a 2022-23 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American First Team selection, becoming the first ever Redbird in program history to be named Academic All-America First Team. This comes only one season after Crompton collected Academic All-America Third Team honors following the 2021-22 season. Only Crompton and Beth Landes Ehresman (1980) have been honored with Academic All-America honors in program history.
During the 2022-23 season, Crompton achieved a pair of career milestones to wrap up her time in Normal. The Iowa City native became the 30th student athlete, second under Kristen Gillespie, to eclipse 1,000 career points as a Redbird. Crompton also surpassed former ISU standout Kristi Cirone's program record for career three-pointers made, as the Iowa City native finished her ISU career with 300 career triples.
Crompton is a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was awarded Illinois State's most prestigious undergraduate academic award, the Robert G. Bone Scholarship, in 2021.
Crompton maintained a 4.0 grade-point average while pursuing her master's degree in Biological Studies, graduating this past May. She received her bachelor's degree in just three years from ISU, with a 4.0 GPA while earning a degree in Physiology, Neuroscience and Behavior, and adding a minor in Chemistry.
To be eligible for consideration, recipients must have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40, participated with distinction in a Missouri Valley Conference championship sport for at least two seasons at the nominating institution and must graduate from their institutions within 18 months following selection at the spring meetings of the Faculty Athletics Representative Committee.
Also, the recipients must be accepted for postgraduate studies at an institution of higher learning at the time of receipt of the scholarship. And, the recipients must have completed eligibility for participation in intercollegiate athletics in the academic year in which nominated.
