NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State (2-3-2, 0-0-1 in MVC) drew a 1-1 tie with Evansville (0-3-4,0-0-1) in the first matchup of MVC play in Normal on Friday night.
The Redbirds earned their first goal on a mistake from Evansville, as one of their players scored an own goal, putting Illinois State ahead in the 25th minute. The 'Birds stayed ahead through the half, and it was not until nine minutes left on the clock that Evansville found the equalizer.
Defense was the name of the game for both teams, each only allowing one goal, as well as both teams having under five shots on goal. The Redbirds won in the total shot count with ten where the Purple Aces only amassed six. Both teams earned three corners, but Evansville committed fourteen fouls to the Redbirds eight.
The Redbirds and the Purple Aces both earn a point in conference play. Illinois State is back in action against the Missouri State Bears next Thursday at 7 PM on the road in Springfield.
