ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Illinois State freshman Johnny Kinziger has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week, announced by the Conference office on Monday afternoon.
Kinziger earns ISU's first-ever Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He made 7-of-11 shots from the field, while converting on 1-of-2 from three-point range and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. He opened his week with 13 points and a career-high seven rebounds in a win against Belmont, as he played 32 minutes.
The De Pere, Wisconsin, native closed the week with a 10-point scoring effort on 3-of-6 shooting from the field, including making one of his two three-point tries. He also had three rebounds against the Purple Aces with a pair of steals.
This season he is averaging 6.2 points per game with 43 rebounds and 28 assists. He has made nearly 45 percent of his shots from the field, 35 percent from beyond the arc, and nearly 83 percent from the charity stripe.
The Redbirds return to action on Tuesday, January 30 when the team travels to Murray, Kentucky, to take on the Murray State Racers in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
