Golden Eagles Too Much for Redbirds in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Illinois State women's basketball (5-4, 0-0 MVC) saw its three-game win streak snapped Sunday 78-57 at the hands of Marquette (6-2, 0-0 Big East) inside Al Maguire Center.  

HIGHLIGHTS 

• Marquette scored the first basket of the game and never trailed. The Golden Eagles built a 20-7 first-quarter lead that the Redbirds couldn't overcome. Marquette led 39-21 heading into the break.  

• Illinois State generated momentum in the early moments of the third quarter, outscoring Marquette 8-2 to trim the deficit to 41-29 at the 7:24 mark. Shannon Dowell scored six of the eight points for Illinois State, before the Golden Eagles responded to take a 61-35 lead before the end of the third.  

• Dowell, who led Illinois State with 12 points, was one of three Redbirds in double-figures. Nevaeh Thomas tallied 11 points for the Redbirds while Addi Martin finished with 10 points.  

GAME NOTES 

• The Redbirds shot a season-low 22-55 (40%) from the field Sunday and scored a season-low 57 points.  

• Dowell and Thomas have reached double figures in every game for Illinois State, averaging 14.8 points per game and 13.6 points per game respectively. Martin reached double figures for the seventh time this season and the fourth straight outing.  

• Illinois State had outrebounded its opponent in four consecutive games heading into the game, but saw that streak come to an end Sunday as Marquette held a 42-25 advantage on the boards.
