'Birds Ride Hot Start to Road Win at Bradley

PEORIA, ILL. – DeAnna Wilson tallied her second-straight double-double and her seventh double-double of the season as Illinois State Women's Basketball (17-8, 10-5 MVC), rode past Bradley (6-20, 2-13) Thursday night in Peoria.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wilson dominated Thursday, scoring 23 points and shooting 9-for-17 (52.9%) from the field. Her 13 rebounds were a season high, which she paired with two steals and 1 assist. Wilson scored all 10 of Illinois State's fourth-quarter points as the Redbirds picked up a win.

  • Freshman Shannon Dowell put up a strong all-around performance, finishing one rebound shy of her second-career double-double. Dowell scored 7 of her 10 points in the second half and finished with 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.

  • Illinois State jumped out to 24-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back, shooting 6-for-10 from three in the opening quarter. The Redbirds cooled off the rest of the way, but the strong start was enough for a win.

  • Four different Redbirds hit a three in the opening quarter, including Kate Bullman and Abbie Aalsma who both knocked down a pair. Illinois State's first and last made baskets of the first quarter were Bullman threes. Maya Wong and Caroline Waite also connected from deep.

  • The Redbirds built as high as a 19-point lead in the second quarter, as Wilson scored 9 points to lead Illinois State. Her bucket down low gave Illinois State a 33-14 lead at the 6:05 mark of the quarter. The Redbirds took a 40-27 lead into the locker room.

  • Wilson and Dowell combined for 17 of Illinois State's 28 second-half points to lead the Redbirds and close out the win.

GAME NOTES

  • Wilson surpassed 800 career rebounds in Thursday's effort, which she is the 4th player in program history to do. She currently has 805 career rebounds, a mark that ranks third in program history.

  • Wilson also moved into second in program history for career free throws, reaching 367 for her Redbird career.

  • The performance was Wilson's third 20-point, 10-rebound double-double of the season and the sixth of her Illinois State career.

  • It also marked the third time this season Wilson has finished with a double-double in back-to-back games. She has 25th career double-double, which puts Wilson one-shy of moving into third on the program's all-time double-doubles list.

  • The Redbirds were 12-for-14 from the free throw line in the win (85.7%), which was the fifth time over the last six games that Illinois State has shot north of 85 percent from the free throw line.

  • Ten different Redbirds scored in the win, including seven who had at least four points.

  • Illinois State had just five turnovers, which was a season low and marked the first time this season the Redbirds have finished a single game with five or fewer turnovers. Illinois State has finished with fewer than 9 turnovers in back-to-back games.
