ORLANDO, Fla. – It was a busy Sunday for the Illinois State men's tennis team, as the Redbirds played a pair of matches at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. In the morning match, the Redbirds rolled to a 7-0 win over Salve Regina, before dropping an afternoon match to No. 13 Florida State by a final of 4-0.
In the first match of the day, the Redbirds jumped out to the early lead by sweeping the doubles matches against Salve Regina to take a 1-0 lead. As the action moved to singles play, ISU was dominant losing just four games all day in six straight-set sweeps to come away with a 7-0 win.
After a brief rest, the Redbirds returned to the courts against the Florida State Seminoles, who came into the match ranked No. 13 in the latest ITA national rankings. As the match began with doubles, the No. 2 doubles team of Arvid Hjalte and Tom Bevan battled, but ultimately fell by a score of 7-5. The Noles also picked up a win at No. 1 to secure the doubles point and take the early advantage. FSU also picked up singles wins at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 to secure the four points necessary to take the victory over the Redbirds.
The Redbirds wrap up their Florida trip on Monday, with an 11 a.m. match against Marist at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
