GLENCOE, Ala. – Shooting three shots better than the opening day, the Illinois State women's golf team remains in second place at the 2024 Chris Banister Golf Classic, hosted by Jacksonville State University.
ISU's second-round 300 was the third-lowest score on the day, and the team's 607 is a stroke ahead of host Jacksonville State and 16 behind two-day leader Chattanooga. Northern Colorado (618), North Alabama (619), Queens (639), Stonehill (688), and South Alabama (692) round out the eight schools in the tournament field.
Behind a three-over 75, Ali Schrock is two strokes over par for the tournament and tied for second place, a stroke off the individual lead with 18 holes remaining in the tournament. Jinyoung Yun had a stellar ending to her round, and with a nine-over-par tournament score of 153 stands tied for 12th in the field, while Dani Grace Schrock's 155 (78-77) has her tied for 16th. Using ISU's best round of the day with a 73, Vinisha Gunaseelan climbed 11 spots into a tie of 23rd with a two-round 157. Avalon Woodward has carded rounds of 80 and 78 for a 158 in the tournament and is tied for 27th, while Kira Wolf – playing as an individual – is tied for 32nd with a two-day score of 162 (80-82).
Gunaseelan's round saw a birdie and 15 pars, as she used her balanced scores to come in with the one-over 73, the lowest score on the squad that pushed her into the top-25 of the field.
Ali Schrock and Yun carded matching 75's on the day, and each got to their scores in different ways. Schrock opened with a birdie and was at even par through her first nine holes, and remained even through 14 holes; however, closed with three bogeys and a par to finish with the three-over 75. Schrock's average score of 4.63 on par 5's in the tournament is the lowest in the tournament.
Yun also opened with a birdie but ran into trouble over her next six holes and was six over par through eight holes on the round. With a birdie, two pars and two bogeys over the next five holes she was seven strokes over par before closing strong with four birdies among her last four holes, closing the day three shots over par.
Dani Grace Schrock improved her round score by a stroke from the first two the second round, and had two birdies, 11 pars over her second round for the 77, with Woodward finishing a stroke behind, using two birdies – on the fifth and sixth holes – in addition to nine pars for the six-over 78. Wolf had eight pars and 10 bogeys during her 18-hole second round.
The Redbirds tee off tomorrow with Wolf going off at 8:40 a.m. on the 10th hole, while Woodward (9:25), Gunaseelan (9:35), Dani Grace Schrock (9:45), Yun (9:55), and Ali Schrock (10:05) teeing off on the first hole.
