BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Illinois State men's tennis team began their spring break on Friday in Bloomington, Indiana, as the Redbirds dropped a 6-1 decision to the No. 43 ranked Indiana Hoosiers at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early lead in doubles play, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to take an early 1-0 lead. IU then jumped out to a 4-0 lead with wins at the No. 2-4 spots, before the Redbirds picked up their lone point of the match courtesy of Tomas Valencia who defeated Nikola Kolyachev by a score of 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot. A win at the No. 6 spot would then move the score to 5-1, before action on court No. 1 wrapped up. There, Indiana's Facundo Yunis picked up a hard-fought victory over ISU's Nam Pham by a final of 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-6 to bring the match to a close.
Illinois State will now head to Florida for three matches in Orlando beginning on Sunday at the USTA National Campus against Salve Regina at 8 a.m., before the Redbirds take on No. 13 Florida State at 1:30 p.m.
