Redbirds Wrap Up Day Two of Gibson Invitational and One Day Stint at LSU

Terre Haute, Ind. - The Illinois State track & field squads wrapped up the second day at the Gibson Invitational, with a total of 16 personal best times set on the day, while a separate group of student-athletes finished their one-day stint in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the LSU Gold Alumni meet.

The Redbirds amassed a total of 16 personal-best marks and times at the Gibson Invitational. 

On the men's side, a total of 10 personal-best times included a second-place finish in the pole vault by Charles Cruse with a mark of 5.01m (16-05.25) and a third-place finish in the shot put by Jacob Rollins. Also finishing in the top 5 was Brandon Ratliff in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.47.

Personal-best times on the men's side on Saturday included:

• Virgil Steward - 100m dash - 10.87 

• Ryan Schafer - 110m hurdles - 16.26 seconds; 400m hurdles - 56.02 seconds

• Sam Atkinson - 200m dash - 49.40 

• Cade Ward - 400m hurdles - 55.69 

• Jonathan Tegal - 400m hurdles - 55.88 

• Dylan Meyers - 1,500m - 3:59.85

• Noah Penry - 5,000m - 15:06.55

• Carter Smott - 5,000m - 15:18.48

• Jacob Rollins - shot put - 16.11m (52-10.25)

On the women's side, Cambria Geyer placed fourth in the 400m hurdles and Macee Rivers finished fifth in the 100m in a time of 14.04. Carley Tucker also took fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.62m (5-03.75) and Brittney Oakley was third in the long jump at 5.69m (18-08.00).

A total of six personal-best times included: 

• Mattie Lieb - 100m dash - 11.93 

• Chavi Flowers - 400m dash - 57.25 

• Lauren Schulze - 1,500m run - 4:40.44

• Maggie Reed - 3,000m steeplechase - 11:05.74

• Laney Lester - discus throw - 38.54m (126-05) 

• Megan Clark - long jump - 5.69m (18-8.00)

LSU Gold Alumni 

The Redbirds had a total of four season-best marks and times with heavy competition in the bayou that included: 

• Hassy Fashina-Bombata - 100m hurdles - 13.65 
• Bayta Butler - discus throw - 44.76m (146-10)
• Abby Milott - long jump 5.51m (18-1.00)
• Women's 4x100m relay - 45.27

Notable finishes included sophomore Dewayne Johnson, as he finished in the top 10 in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.30 seconds. Sophomore Enyinnaya Nwagwu finished sixth with a time of 21.70 in the 200m dash, while junior Raydoffa Braziel took eighth in the 400m dash as he crossed the finish line in 46.63 seconds, just .02 from his personal-best time. 

In the middle distance, Garrett Slack finished ninth in the 800m run with a time of 1:53.29. Senior Macy Byer finished sixth in the discus with a mark of 51.58m (169-02). Two Redbird throwers finished inside the top-10 in the men's shot put, as senior Joe Boyer took sixth with a mark of 16.50m (54-1.75), and Garrett Taylor finished eighth with a toss of 15.79m (51-9.75).

Up Next 

A select group of Redbirds will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to compete in the prestigious Drake Relays on April 25-27, while a squad of student-athletes will compete across town at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite on Friday, April 26.
