BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – As is typically the case when Illinois State and North Dakota meet on the courts, Sunday's match between the Redbirds and the Fighting Hawks came down to the final match of the day to decide things and unfortunately for ISU, it was UND that picked up the win on Court No. 3 to come away with a 4-3 win over the Redbirds on Senior Day at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
The match began with the Redbirds gaining an early advantage by winning the doubles point. Arvid Hjalte and Nam Pham rolled to a 6-2 win over UND's Jerall Yasin and Leandro Zgraggen to go up early, before the Fighting Hawks battled back to take a 6-4 win on Court No. 1 to tie things up. That left the decision on the doubles point to Court No. 3, where Caden Scarlett and Tomas Valencia picked up a 6-4 victory to secure the doubles point for the Redbirds.
ISU would then go up 3-0 in the match as things moved to singles, thanks to a quick 6-3, 6-0 win by Tin Ostro on Court No. 6 and a three-set victory by Emiliano Gonzalez on Court No. 5. UND would then tie the match at 3-3 with a trio of three-set wins over ISU on courts 2, 4 and 1. That left the decision to Court No. 3, where Adrian Dibildox battled to a third set but ultimately fell by a score of 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to Ange-Kevin Koua.
Illinois State will wrap up the regular season next weekend in Denver, when they wrap up Summit League play on Sunday against league-leader Denver before a Sunday match against Metropolitan State.
