CHICAGO, Ill. – Behind a hot-start offensively and a quality outing from senior Cameron Mabee, Illinois State stymied a late UIC rally and secured Friday night's series opener, 8-7, at Les Miller Field.
The Redbirds (25-22 overall, 13-9 MVC) saw senior Auggie Rasmussen and sophomore Luke Lawrence lead the offense, as both went 2-for-5 with three RBIs on Friday.
UIC drops to 31-15 overall including 14-8 in the MVC and 17-5 at home in 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIC got on the board early on with two runs in the 1st inning off an RBI groundout and RBI double.
The Redbirds responded with a six-run 2nd inning that saw 11 'Birds come to the plate. Four of ILS' six runs came via a pair of two-run home runs from redshirt junior Judah Morris and Rasmussen.
The Flames got a run back in the bottom of the 4th before Rasmussen sent out his second home run of the night in the 5th to make it 7-3 ILS.
Lawrence would tally his third RBI of the night in the 6th with an RBI double as UIC responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to make it an 8-4 ball game after six.
The Flames scored three runs in the 9th but the late rally would fall short as junior Joe Husak got the final two outs to secure the Friday night win and his sixth save of 2024.
