EAST LANSING, Mich. – Behind a team-low even-par 72 from graduate student Ali Schrock, the Illinois State women's golf team opened play at the 2024 NCAA East Lansing Regional. Schrock became the first Redbird golfer since Stacey Miller in 2009 to card an opening round score at or under par at a NCAA Regional.
Play resumes on Tuesday morning for the second round of the regional, starting at 9:05 a.m. (an hour earlier than previously scheduled to attempt to avoid potential afternoon and evening storms).
The Redbirds carded a team score of 311 on the difficult Forest Akers West course and are in 12th with two days of competition ahead. Sixth ranked Southern California (281) leads the field through 18 holes with #21 Pepperdine (283), #8 Northwestern (284), #18 Florida (287), #41 Denver (290), #30 Michigan State (291), #43 Oklahoma State (291), #32 Kentucky (292), #59 Indiana (295), #62 Augusta (298), and Oakland (302) sitting ahead of ISU.
Schrock played a nearly-clean opening nine holes with eight pars and a bogey, before coming back with two birdies over her first four holes of the back nine – on the second and fourth holes – and came into the clubhouse ranked tied for 19th in the field with an even-par 72.
Six pars on the front nine from Jinyoung Yun saw the graduate student make the turn at three shots over par. She recorded birdies on the first two holes of her back nine to drop her aggregate score to one shot over par; however, a five-hold stretch in which she was four over par pushed her to six over par with the 78 and is tied for 54th in the field.
Avalon Wodward used 10 pars on the day for her opening-round 81, which has her tied for 61st, while Michaela Kverkova (82) and Vinisha Gunaseelan (84) are tied for 64th and 66th in the tournament field with 36 holes to play in the tournament.
