Redbird Track & Field Secures 14 Event Wins In Coughlan-Malloy Cup Defeat

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State track & field team battled against rivals Indiana State in the Coughlan-Malloy Cup Friday afternoon at Horton Field House.

The Redbirds fell just short of reclaiming the cup after being edged out by the Sycamores on points, 157-145. Despite the defeat, Illinois State claimed 14 event wins throughout the competition.

Sophomore Immaculate Daniel kicked off the meet running a time of 7.26 to finish first in the 60m dash. Daniel's time set an Illinois State school record along with a Coughlan-Malloy Cup record. As of January 17, Daniel's time currently sits as the sixth fastest time in the NCAA.

Senior Mattison Plummer made her season debut capturing victory in the women's 3000m with a time of 9:38.15. Plummer now sits seventh on the program's top-10 list and also broke the Coughlan-Malloy meet record.

Senior Kiley Sanders picked up from where she left off in December claiming victory in the women's high jump. Sanders' mark of 1.78 (5-10) set a new Coughlan-Malloy Cup record.

Senior Sean Hopkins claimed victory in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.11m (23-04). Hopkins jump currently sits 78th in the NCAA Division I rankings.

Junior Charles Cruse won the men's pole vault event, with a mark of 4.86m (15-11.25) in his first appearance for the Redbirds this season. Cruse's mark currently sits 91st in the NCAA Division I rankings. Senior Windsor Roberts wrapped up the sweep for the Redbirds clearing the bar at 3.76m (12-04).

Freshman Astor Snider recorded a personal best jump of 14.77m in the men's triple jump to finish in second place. Snider's mark currently sits 51st in the NCAA Division I rankings.

In her first race returning from injury Senior Corrina Courser finished second with a time of 8.51 in the 60m hurdles. Junior Erin Starks matched Courser's time of 8.51 to capture third. Starks and Courser's times entered each into sixth place on the program's top-10 list.

Senior Caleb Lerus secured victory in the 300m dash with a time of 35.57 with Freshman Evan Watson finishing in third place with a time of 36.09.

The Redbirds swept the podium in the women's 500m as Junior Star Mpama captured first with a time of 1:16.27. Illinois State swept the podium as Junior Nnenna Okpara and Harmony Brown finished second and third with times of 1:09.03 and 1:20.76. In the men's 500m, Junior Jake Welch captured first with a mark of 1:03.88 as Junior Cade Ward tallied a third-place finish with a time of 1:06.06.

Junior Yusuf Baig earned a victory in the men's 1000m with a time of 2:30.92 in his first action of the 2024-25 season. Freshman Luke Barham recorded a third-place finish with a mark of 2:32.98.

On the women's side, the sophomore pairing Colleen Zeibert and Trixie Johnson finished 1-2 for the Redbirds. Zeibert ran a time of 2:57.10 while Johnson recorded a mark of 3:01.84.

In his debut with the Redbirds, transfer Ian Geisler ran a time of 4:17.23 to cross the line second in the mile. Sophomore Blake Oleson finished third with a mark of 4:18.69.  On the women's side, Senior Lauren Schulze ran a personal best time of 5:00.07 to finish second. Sophomore Grace Erb finished third in her first appearance of 2025.

Seniors Zack Loomis and Noah Penry wrapped up a 1-2 finish for Illinois State in the 3000m run. Loomis earned the victory with a mark of 8:29.69 as Penry recorded a personal best time of 8:48.91.

The Redbirds relay teams swept the 4x400m relay as the men's team ran a time of 3:21.25 and the women's team finished with a mark of 3:56.36.

Sophomore Garrett Taylor tallied a fourth-place finish in the men's shot put with a throw of 16.52m (54-2.5). Sophomore Cole Stevens recorded a sixth-place finish with a season-best mark of 15.70m (51-6.25).

Stevens also recorded a personal best throw of 17.96m in the weight throw to finish in third place. On the women's side freshman Chidiogo Odeluga recorded a personal best throw of 15.37m (50-5.25) to record a third-place finish.

UP NEXT

The Redbirds will make their first road trip of the season as they head to Iowa City, Iowa to compete at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa. The event's start time will be announced at a later date.
