Ty’Reek Coleman Named MVC Freshman of the Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Illinois State freshman guard Ty'Reek Coleman has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's Freshman of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Coleman scored 27 points as the Redbirds went 1-1 on the week. He scored 24 points in the weekend finale against Cornell, which is the 21st-most by a freshman in school history, and the second-highest in a home debut by a freshman since Emon Washington scored 30 points against NCAA Division III Greenville on December 2, 2020.

His point total against the Big Red has him as one of just two freshman in the NCAA this season to have scored 24 or more points, and one of two players of those 10 to not play for a traditional power-conference school. Of those 10 freshmen to score 24+ points, only one (Caleb Wilson of North Carolina) did so on a higher field goal percentage than the 6-of-8 night that Coleman had.

Illinois State returns to action on Friday afternoon against the USC Trojans in a 6:30 p.m. (CT) tip-off inside the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.
