NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State soccer suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Northwestern on Sunday evening at Adelaide Street Field.
In the opening moments of the game, each squad pressed to find an early advantage in the contest, with both teams forcing three saves from the opposing keeper in the first 20 minutes.
Later in the closing minutes of the first half, the Wildcats found opportunities in the Illinois State third of the field but were denied as Redshirt Sophomore Madi Valenti tallied two saves to keep the contest level 0-0 entering the break.
Moments after the second half started, Northwestern would find its winning goal with a goal in the 49th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
As the Redbirds trailed, they would continue to try to claw their way back into the contest, but were unable to find an equalizing goal.
Despite the loss, Redshirt Sophomore Madi Valenti tallied a career-best 10 saves in the contest. Valenti's save total is the single most in a game by a Redbird since 2023.
Graduate transfer Elyse DeSchryver, a former member of the Northwestern squad tallied 42 minutes against her former squad.
