ST. LOUIS – For the sixth time in his career, Illinois State senior golfer TJ Barger has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week after his performance at the season-opening Island Resort Intercollegiate.
By earning his sixth MVC Golfer of the Week honor, he jumps into a tie of 20th-most career honors in MVC history, and fifth-most among Illinois State golfers, trailing only David Perkins (15), Trent Wallace (10), Matt Miller (9), and Valentin Peugnet (7).
Barger tied for eighth in the deep field at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, behind rounds of 71, 66, and 68 on the par-72 course. The tournament score of 205 is the 11th-best in men's golf history, and a new career-best for the Bloomington native. His 66 in the second round is tied for the 19th-best single-round score in school history.
Over his ISU career Barger – who earned First Team All-MVC honors last season – has played in 73 rounds with a career stroke average of 72.658, which stands as the second-lowest career scoring average in school history.
The Redbird return to action on Thursday, September 11 at the Ram Masters Invitational, hosted at Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colorado.
