NORMAL, Ill. – A pair of Illinois State gymnastics standouts were honored Wednesday for their performances last weekend, as junior Ally Lau earned Midwest Independent Conference Performance of the Week honors and freshman Jercy Koliego was named the MIC Newcomer of the Week as well as this week's MIC Coaches Choice honoree.
Lau put together her best performance of the year on the balance beam last Saturday night at Central Michigan. The junior scored a 9.825 to win the beam competition and tie for the highest individual score of the night for a Redbird gymnast. She shared this week's MIC Performance of the Week with Texas Woman's Sophia Isbell.
Koliego posted a career-best on bars against the Chippewas, as she scored a 9.800 to finish in fourth place overall, the highest in her young career at Illinois State. She was also selected for the Coaches Choice Award, which is awarded weekly to student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional leadership, team spirit, and performance. Selected by conference head coaches, the award highlights athletes who overcome adversity or contribute significantly to their team's culture.Â
Illinois State is back in action on Sunday, February 1, when the Redbirds compete in a quad meet hosted by Southeast Missouri State. In addition to the hosts, the Redbirds will compete against Ball State and UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. inside Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
