Heitzig Claims MVC Women's Runner of the Week

NORMAL, Ill. -- Illinois State's Becca Heitzig has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Runner of the Week, it was announced Wednesday by the conference. This is the sophomore transfer's first career MVC honor and the third for a Redbird this track & field season.

This recognition comes after Heitzig led the Redbird track & field team last weekend, claiming two event titles at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. Heitzig clocked a personal-record time of 2:46.58 to win the 1000m race and break the school record by over two seconds (2:49.01). That mark leads the MVC and ranks 29th in the NCAA. Then, she took gold in the 800m with a mark of 2:08.80, good for fourth in program history and first in the conference.

Up Next

Heitzig will be back on the track at the Windy City Classic in Chicago on Feb. 6-7.
