VALPARAISO, Ind. – In a game that saw a dozen ties and six lead changes, the Illinois State Redbirds fell at Valparaiso on Wednesday night by a 77-71 final score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Redbirds and Beacons traded the lead three times in the early portion of the contest, and the teams were tied at six, before Valparaiso took a lead they would not give up for the remainder of the half with a 5-0 run. Twice ISU closed the gap to one, the final time after a three-pointer by Jack Daugherty; however, the Beacons ran off an 8-0 run to stretch the lead to double-digits, with Valpo taking a 12-point, 35-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Trailing by 12 at the break, the Redbirds started chipping away at the deficit, knotting the score at 48, 50, 54, and 56, before ISU took its first lead of the second half on a lay-in by Johnny Kinziger. The teams were again tied at 60 and 62, and the Redbirds trailed 68-64 before Johnny Kinziger made a pair of free throws and a jumper to re-tie the score at 68. A Valpo jumper with 1:49 to play put the hosts up two, and the Redbirds would not be able to knot the score again in the six-point loss.
