Redbirds Drop Series Opener With Michigan State Thursday Afternoon

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Illinois State baseball program dropped its series opener with a 10-0 defeat to Michigan State in seven innings Thursday evening at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium.

Following a scoreless opening frame, the Spartans struck first with a walk and a single through the left side of the infield to place runners on the corners to begin the second inning. Moments later, Michigan State took the advantage with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

In the third, the Spartans capitalized on a Redbirds error following a double earlier in the frame, to plate their second run and move the score to 2-0. With a run across in the inning, Michigan State added another run on an RBI double, growing its lead to 3-0 after three frames.

Michigan State extended its advantage with an RBI single following back-to-back one-out singles that put a pair of runners on, moving its lead to 4-0. After an additional single to load the bases, the Spartans scored with a walk to extend their advantage to 5-0. Michigan State later rounded out the three-run frame with an RBI groundout to make the score 6-0.

In the sixth, the Spartans rattled off back-to-back singles to open the inning to place runners on the corners to set up its second sacrifice fly of the contest and take a 7-0 advantage. Later in the frame, following a single, Michigan State added a pair of runs on an RBI double and a Redbird error on the relay throw to move the score to 9-0. The Spartans later added their fourth run of the frame with an RBI groundout to secure a 10-0 lead.

Michigan State limited the Redbird offense in the top of the seventh to earn the run-rule victory on Thursday evening.
