Benji Mastandrea

Benji Mastandrea joined the Illinois State University women’s basketball staff in July, 2021 as the program’s Video Coordinator. He enters his second season with the Redbirds in 2022-23.

Mastandrea directs and manages all video operations for the women’s basketball staff, including assisting with scout video, film exchange, coding practices, games, and opponent film, and creating post-game highlight films.

Mastandrea also assists with all on-campus recruiting visits, makes recruiting calls to prospective student-athletes, and recruited in-person summer 2022 (with absence of assistant coach).

In his role, Mastandrea also provides analytic reports for the Redbirds following each game, with an emphasis on offensive execution. Mastandrea helps tailor offensive sets and scouting reports based on analytic numbers and statistics.

As a member of the 2021-2022 staff that saw Illinois State appear in the NCAA Tournament – first appearance in 14 years – Mastandrea’s focus was on analytic reports, scouting reports, and player development. He also created offensive execution reports and a video database of offensive sets.

He previously spent two years as a graduate manager with the women’s basketball program where he assisted in day-to-day operations, assisted with film breakdown of practices, games, and opponents. He also assisted the Director of Basketball Operations with food and travel logistics.

Prior to his time at Illinois State, he spent four years coaching at the high school and AAU levels in the Jacksonville, Fla area, including stints at Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Bishop John J. Snyder High School, Jacksonville Basketball Academy, and Jax Hoops Academy.

Mastandrea holds a Master’s Degree in Sport Management from Illinois State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management from University of North Florida.
