Williams, Mkwezalamba Highlight ISU's Efforts at Iowa State Classic

AMES, Iowa - Devon Williams set a season and personal best time of 24.56 seconds in the women's 200 meter dash, and Maxwell Mkwezalamba crossed the line in a season-best 22.19 in the men's 200-meter dash to lead Illinois State's respective track and field teams in the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic inside Lied Recreation Facility Friday. No team scores were kept at the event, and all recorded times were finals tallies.

Illinois State competed in five individual events on the men's side. Bryan Chancellor recorded a weight throw of 45-00.50 and placed 39th; the Redbirds' distance medley squad clocked in at 10:15.31; Jordan Anderson was ISU's top finisher in the 5,000 meter run (15:28.98), and Mkwezalamba's run in the 200 meter dash placed him 45th overall.

Williams highlighted the womens' effort on day one, but she was closely followed by Kristin Brinkman, who finished 13th overall in the pole vault (11-01.75). ISU's distance medley team recorded an eighth-place tally in 11:57.05; Kathleen Thompson was the Redbirds' top finisher in the 5,000 meter run (17:52.01), and Frannie Epps crossed the line in 9.14 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, good enough for 32nd place overall.

Competition will continue Saturday, beginning at 9:25 a.m. with the women's 3,000 meter run. The ISU Classic will conclude with the 4X400 meter relay scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

More than 80 teams and over 1,700 track and field athletes will have competed in the two-day event at its conclusion Saturday night.
