DES MOINES, Iowa -
DES MOINES, Iowa - In her final event of the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Illinois State freshman Brittany Smith placed 18th in the discus throw with a toss of 140-8 on Friday afternoon at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Smith secured her spot at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships, to be held July 19-25 in Moncton, Canada, by placing first in the shot put competition yesterday afternoon.
"I was a little disappointed with my performance in the discus today, but it eased my mind knowing that I had already qualified in the shot put yesterday," said Smith. "Overall, it was a great experience and I was very excited to be part of an event with so many talented athletes that were around my age."
The Oak Park, Ill., native finished the five-day meet with three top-18 finishes, as she placed 12th in the hammer throw on Thursday after posting a mark of 157-02.
