SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - After two rounds of play, the Illinois State women's golf team sits in eighth place with a team score of 606 (289-317) at the Cardinal Cup Monday. The Redbirds were lead by senior Katie Jean and junior Rachel Powers, as the duo finished the day in a tie for sixth place.

Head Coach Darby Slighwas pleased with her team's first-round performance.

"Today's first round is what we've been looking for a long time now," explained Sligh. "We showed focus and poise coming down the stretch and Rachel [Powers] and Katie [Jean] played incredibly solid golf all day long. With wind and rain setting in during the second round, we just could not get a grasp on things and let shots slip away. We have to take a positive step towards tuesday and think about the incredibly successful first round that led the field and threatened to break the school record."

Jean started the first round with a noteworthy performance of 2-under-par (70), finishing with a two-round score of 146 (70-76). Powers also tallied a score of 146 with an impressive first round 4-under-par performance (68). Jean and Powers both are currently tied for sixth place on the individual leader board.

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was sophomore Hayley Guyton with a score of 156 (76-80), followed by junior Jordyn Wyzgowski with a score of 161 (75-86) and freshman Courtnee Cossell with a day one score of 167 (84-83). Carlee Cossell, who competed as an individual, finished with a score of 174 (85-89).

ISU is seven strokes behind a third place tie between Missouri and Georgia State and 15 strokes behind day one leader Louisville.

The Redbirds tee off Tuesday at 7:40 a.m. (CST) for the third and final round of play.
