NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State junior Rodrigo Oliveira, sophomore Urh Krajnc Domiter and freshman Andreas Boers all won their respective singles flights to wrap up tournament play at the SIUE Fall Invitational Saturday.
Domiter continued his early season success, beating Yehia El Sallaly of Saint Louis, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, and Nic Vincent of SIUE, 7-5, 6-4. Oliveira also maintained his perfect singles record this season, defeating David Ferragut of Saint Louis, 6-3, 6-1, and Marten Jonsson of SIUE in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
The Redbirds finished the day with a 2-0 doubles record at the SIUE Fall Invitational in Edwardsville, Illinois.
"The guys started the day off well, sweeping the second round of singles," Illinois State head coach Mark Klysner said. "I think it was a solid weekend with some positive results as well as it being great for the freshmen to pick up their first collegiate wins."
Juniors Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas also represented themselves well Saturday, concluding their second day of match play at the Indiana Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Indiana.
Torrellas won his first singles match of the day, beating Indiana's Alekzander Davila, 6-2, 6-0, before eventually falling in a tough semifinals match against Indiana's Matthew McCoy, 6-4, 6-4. Eisner also finished 1-1 on the day, defeating Dayton's Graham Reinbold but losing to Indiana's Elliott Yee, 6-2, 6-3.
The two Redbirds also split their doubles matches, defeating Louisville's Santiago Salazar and Pally Ray in the quarterfinals, 8-7, before losing in a best-of-three final to Daniel Bednarczyic and Chris Essick of Indiana, 6-2, 6-4.
"Jakub and Rolando showed a lot of poise to come out in doubles after two singles matches," Klysner said. "I know Rolando was feeling the exhaustion from having played so much, but they gave it a good run and almost capped off the day with a win."
Illinois State will finish its opening weekend Sunday at the Indiana Hoosier Classic.
