Redbirds Finish Weekend Tournaments

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team wrapped up tournament play at the Western Michigan Vredevelt Invitational and ITA All-American Championships Sunday.

The Redbirds finished the weekend at the Vredevelt Invitational with two players placing third in their respective singles flights. Sophomore Urh Krajnc Domiter defeated Western Michigan's Jeta Kecic in Flight A by a score of 3-4 ret., while sophomore Dylan Steffens beat Wisconsin Green Bay's Rowan Isaaks in Flight E, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.

"I was happy to see Dylan finish the tournament with a win," said Illinois State head coach Mark Klysner. "I think the guys got some valuable match time in this weekend and it definitely gives us an idea of what they need to work on for the next tournament."

Freshman Christoffer Greve also played at the Vredevelt Invitational Sunday, losing a close match to Mirko Radosevic of Cleveland State, 7-6(3), 6-3. Freshman Andreas Boers competed against Wisconsin Green Bay's Joey Leto, but got beat by the same mark, 7-6(3), 6-3.

Illinois State also ended singles play at the ITA All-American Championships Sunday, with four of five Redbirds losing in their respective matches.  

"This was a very tough weekend in terms of the level of competition," Klysner said. "I had hoped we would do a little better, but I think we just needed a few more matches before facing these big programs."

Senior Jacob Wilson was the only Redbird to reach the pre-qualifying third round, but fell to the No. 4 player in the bracket, Jack Murray from North Carolina, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Rolando Torrellas had the only victory for the Redbirds in Tulsa Sunday, a 6-0, 6-3, win over Oral Roberts' Jan Pehnec.

Illinois State will take a couple weekends off before returning to play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, October 16-20.
