DES MOINES, Iowa – The Illinois State women's tennis team earned seven victories on day one of the Drake Jamboree, Friday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
"Our opponents played with a lot of pace today, and we weren't able to be aggressive enough at certain spots," head coach Maja Kovacek said. "We will look to control the points more tomorrow and execute at the net better in doubles."
In singles play, ISU played six matches against players from Iowa and Iowa State. Marcia Tere-Apisah, Veronika Golanova and Jana Kustkova all earned wins in their respective matches. Tere-Apisah topped Montana Crawford of Iowa, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Golanova defeated Iowa's Carin Runefelt, 6-0, 6-2. Kustkova won against Natalie Phippen of Iowa State, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-3.
In doubles action, the Redbirds concluded the day with four wins. In Flight 1 doubles, Tere-Apisah and Kadi Ilves bested Carin Runefelt and Montana Crawford of Iowa, 7-6 (2). They later fell to Iowa State's Samantha Budai and Liza Buss, 6-4.
Going 2-1 in Flight 2 doubles was the team of Golanova and Kustkova. They first won against Anna Kuuttila and Claudia Toledo of Iowa State, 6-2, and then defeated Iowa's Adorabol Huckleby and Taylor Tamblyn, 6-2. Golanova and Kustkova later fell to Maria Panaite and Millie Stretton of Kansas State, 6-2.
To wrap up the day, Redbird twosome Sarah Paulson and Chanel Scudiero triumphed over Iowa State's Liera Bender and Natalie Phippen, 6-4.
