LINCOLN, Neb. – The Illinois State women's golf team sits in ninth place as day one of the Chip-N Club Invitational at The Country Club of Lincoln concludes. After two rounds, the Redbirds shot a team score of 627 (314-313).
Kiley Walsh led the Redbirds with an individual score of 154 (76-78) and is currently tied for 28th place on the individual leaderboard. Maggie Ambrose is close behind, tying for 32nd by firing a total of 155 (78-77) after two rounds of play.
Head coach Darby Sligh weighs in on the first day of competition.
"Slow starts are plaguing our fall season so far," Sligh said. "Doubles killed us, followed by lack of pars. When it's good, it's very good, but when it's bad, we knock ourselves down too far to climb out. We have to do a better job of managing our games. On the bright side, I'm pleased with the steps we are taking individually to get better, and I know it will begin to pay off sooner rather than later."
Abby Luchtenburg ends day one with a score of 161 (80-81) tied for 48th place with teammate Caitlin Sims, who shot a total of 161 (84-77). Courtnee Cossell has a score of 163 (80-83) heading into the final round of play.
Notre Dame sits on top of the leaderboard with a team score of 577 (297-280) and a notable 16-stroke lead. Tournament host, Nebraska, is in second, shooting a two-round score of 593 (301-292), while South Dakota State takes third after day one with a score of 594 (295-299).
On the individual leaderboard, Megan Mingo of South Dakota State (73-69) and Isabella DiLisio (76-66) of Notre Dame are tied in first place, as both fired a two-round score of 142.
The Chip-N Club Invitational concludes Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the tournament's final round.
