OXFORD, Ohio – The Illinois State women's tennis team was swept by No. 71 Wisconsin, 7-0, Saturday afternoon.
"I'm very proud of Kadi (Ilves) and Donna (Haycock) for their performance in doubles the second day in a row," said head coach Maja Kovacek. "This is the kind of match we can learn from and use to get better. We will be ready to take on St. Louis on Tuesday."
Leading the Redbirds in No.1 doubles competition for two consecutive days, the duo of junior Kadi Ilves and freshman Donna Haycock earned the only win over Wisconsin's Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau, 6-1. Meanwhile, sophomore Chanel Scudiero and freshman Valerija Gercar fell to Wisconsin's Maria Avgerinos and Lauren Chypyha, 6-0, in No. 2 doubles, while, the duo of freshman Catherine Shulman and sophomore Natalia Parchowska suffered a loss to Wisconsin's Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-3, in No. 3 doubles.
Despite Wisconsin claiming victory in all six flights, Ilves battled hard before falling in No.1 singles to Wisconsin's Chypyha, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Meanwhile, Haycock lost to Wisconsin's Avgerinos, 6-1, 6-1 in No.2 singles, while in No.3 singles Shulman fell to Wisconsin's Rider, 6-2, 6-4. Gercar fought hard against Wisconsin's Burich before retiring from the set and falling, 4-6, 6-2 in No.4 singles, while in No. 5 singles, Scudiero lost to Wisconsin's Grambeau, 6-3, 6-4. Similarly, Parchowska was defeated by Wisconsin's Stepanova, 6-2, 6-1 No. 6 singles.
Next up, the Redbirds will be on the road to St. Louis, Missouri Tuesday, March 10 to battle against Saint Louis.
