CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team fell in its Missouri Valley Conference regular-season finale at Southern Illinois, 5-2, Sunday afternoon.
In singles competition, junior Kadi Ilves earned a point for the Redbirds in No. 1 singles, after forcing a third-set tie-breaker before eventually claiming victory over SIU's Natasha Tomishima, 6-2, 6-7(5), 3-6, while freshman Catherine Shulman defeated SIU's Vitoria Beirao, 6-7(5), 4-6, in No. 4 singles, scoring the second point for ISU.
Meanwhile, in No. 2 singles, freshman Donna Haycock fell to SIU's Meagan Monaghan, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1, while sophomore Chanel Scudiero suffered a loss by SIU's Athena Chrysanthou, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 3 singles. SIU's Adriana Cairo Bazo beat freshman Valerija Gercar, 6-2, 6-2, while SIU's Gisela Cairo Bazo won by default versus sophomore Natalia Parchowska, 7-5, 3-0, in No. 6 singles.
In doubles competition, the Redbirds fell short to the Salukis in all three flights. The duo of Ilves and Haycock suffered a setback by SIU's Tomishima and Beirao, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles, while Scudiero and Shulman were defeated by SIU's Monaghan and Polina Dozortseva, 8-3, in No. 2 doubles. Likewise, SIU's Bazo and Bazo claimed victory over Parchowska and Gercar, 8-2, in No. 3 doubles.
With the regular season complete, the Redbirds will head to Evansville, Indiana, to compete in the MVC Team Championships, beginning April 24 at Wesselman Park.
